The geometric shag features a three-level design artfully blended with contour layering. The colorist steps up with a complementary trio of colors that corrects old applications, strengthens the base and adds highlighted dimension.

Tools you'll need:

  1. Begin the cut in the center of the nape. Part out a vertical section below the occipital and direct out from the head. Cut parallel to the base parting to contour to the head and neck.
  2. Work outward on either side with vertical partings, toward the area behind the ear.
  3. Next, blend upward into the crown, raising the elevation and chipping into the ends. Work with pivotal partings toward the sides, blending from the nape upward into the crown.
  4. At the sides, part out a section through the crest. Direct lengths below the crest forward. Holding at a low elevation, chip into the ends to create a texturized line. Blend this line with the back.

  5. Release the section through the crest. Using vertical partings, direct hair out from the head and chip into the lengths. Use this technique to cut up to the front hairline. This will create layers over the weightier perimeter line. Repeat this technique on the other side.
  6. At the top front, overdirect a triangular section to the opposite cheek. Hold at low elevation and cut along a steep diagonal that will create a sweep of fringe across the front.
  7. Direct to the opposite side and chip into the ends. This fringe area becomes the focal point of the design.
  8. The color will be applied within three different zones. Begin application at the lower back with a translucent, rich red-orange demipermanent shade. Apply from the base area out to the ends but leave out the already light ends until the last five minutes.

  9. Continued with this color formula and application to 1/2 inch above the ear. Cover this section with foil.
  10. Through the mid-zone, encircling the head from the temple up to the recession area, apply a permanent cool beige mixed with 30-volume developer as a base shade from the regrowth out through the midshaft.
  11. Next, alternate three different color formulas through the top. Using zigzag slices, begin foiling at the crown using a lightener mixed with 20-volume developer.
  12. Moving forward, apply the cool beige formula used earlier but here mix it with 10-volume developer for more depth of tone.

  13. The next dimensional color formula is a Level-6, demipermanent red-orange.
  14. Around front, apply a mix of colors from midshaft through ends to create light and shadow. Here, along one side of the fringe, the cool beige is applied from the base to the midshaft, while the lightener is applied through the ends.
  15. Within the next foil, the Level-6 red-orange formula is applied out through the ends.
The hair processes with heat, here for 10 minutes. Cool for five minutes and then rinse, shampoo and condition.
  16. To detail the cut, blow dry the hair with a texturizing lotion, then flat iron. Slither down through the midshaft to contour the shape to the head.
